President Emmerson Mnangagwa had described the late national hero, Cde Abraham Kabasa, as a brave and patriotic cadre who should be emulated by everyone in their various fields and professions, for national development.

The President added that Cde Kabasa inspired many young freedom fighters with his bravery, resulting in many of them being motivated to join the liberation struggle to challenge the racist settler regime.

He was speaking today at the National Heroes Acre during the burial of Cde Kabasa.

President Mnangagwa said Cde Kabasa was patriotic and demonstrated unparalleled bravery, adding that everyone alive today, “must take a leaf from the life and legacy of our national hero and serve our country with distinction in whatever our fields and professional endeavours”.

“Let us always remember that it is through the sacrifices made by Cde Kabasa and many other departed and living heroes that we have our freedom, sovereignty, and indeed our land and mineral resources,” he said.

“As we lay to rest the late national hero, Cde Abraham Kabasa at this sacred National Shrine, for remembrance and eternal reverence; I urge our nation, to draw lessons from the patriotism, consistency and persistency of this departed gallant son of the soil. He was loyal to his country all his life.

“He remained a humble, dependable and trustworthy cadre who was always ready and available to serve both the party, ZANU PF, and our beloved motherland, Zimbabwe. Equally, like the collaborators of yesteryear, ngativhurei nzeve nema ziso edu within our communities; we need eyes and ears of collaboration as we scale up vigilance to protect our communities and nation against those we wish us harm.”

President Mnangagwa said the legacy bequeathed to Zimbabwe by Cde Kabasa and many others, who lie across the country and beyond the country’s borders, must be entrenched and shared across generations.

He added that as Zimbabwe goes to the polls in July or August, there was need to defend the country’s independence and consolidate democracy.

Cde Kabasa died on April 29 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

He is survived by widow Miriam, 11 children and 19 great grand children.
