Artisanal and small-scale miners have been urged to practice responsible mining, which will help Zimbabwe to reach the 40 tonnes target by year end, Mines and Mining Development Minister, Winston Chitando has said.
He was speaking in Harare today as he was presiding over the Gold Mobilisation send-off workshop.
Last year, Zimbabwe produced 35 tonnes of gold and the Government is hoping to produce at least 40 tonnes this year.
Said Minister Chitando: “I am happy we had this gold mobilisation (plan) at the beginning of the year because we are now able to map a way forward.
“I am also glad to have heard the issues raised by various presenters because as a Ministry, they really come in handy because from here, we are going back straight to the drawing board and see how best we can ensure that all the dealings in the mining fraternity flow smoothly.”
Minister Chitando also encouraged miners to observe national laws in their operations.
Seventeen teams have been deployed across the eight mining provinces to carry out an inspection and monitoring exercise at a mining areas.
The idea is to ensure all gold mined is delivered to Fidelity Printers and Refiners.
