President Mnangagwa has sent his condolences to families that lost their loved ones while others were injured following the devastating earthquakes that hit Türkiye and Syria on Monday morning.
By late yesterday, the earthquake had claimed over 24 000 lives in both Türkiye and Syria.
Rescue efforts, which are being frustrated by the bitter cold weather, continue although there no realistic hopes of finding survivors, over 100 hours after the disaster.
Signing the condolences book at the Turkish Embassy in Harare yesterday, President Mnangagwa said: “On behalf of the Goverment, the people of the Republic of Zimbabwe and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to convey
our deepest condolences following the devastating earthquake that struck the Province of Kahramanmaras on 6th February 2023.
“Zimbabwe shares the grief, pain and anguish of the families who lost their dearly beloved and those who anxiously wait to hear the news on their loved ones. “We offer our heartfelt thoughts and prayers for the departed and for a speedy convalescence for the injured.
“As the people of the brotherly Republic of Türkiye to terms with this catastrophe, please be assured of Zimbabwe’s solidarity and support.”
In Türkiye, the number of deaths has risen to 20 665 while over 3 500 have been killed in Syria.
The United Nations says 5,3 million people in Syria could be be homeless after the earthquakes, with almost 900 000 people in urgent need of hot food in Türkiye and Syria.
