…go ye and get more voters

By Tinotenda Afarasi

As Zimbabwe moves towards the 2023 harmonised elections in which the ruling Zanu PF is aiming for a landslide victory, members of the Women’s League are encouraging each other to attract new supporters on the strength of the massive developments going on across the country.

Zanu PF wants to garner five million votes for its Presidential candidate, President Mnangagwa, to ensure a thunderous victory.

To recruit more Zanu PF voters, the party’s Women’s League has encouraged all its leadership to tell people about the economic stability and massive infrastructure development projects targeting dams, roads, airports and electricity generation being spearheaded by the Zanu PF Government led by President Mnangagwa.

Zimbabwe is expanding its electricity generation capacity so as to power the numerous projects being initiated across the country covering mining, agriculture and others.

The Hwange Power Station Expansion programme where two brand new units, 7 and 8, are being added, is expected to generate an additional 600MW.

Many small renewable energy projects focusing on hydro and solar are sprouting across Zimbabwe as the ruling Zanu PF seeks to ensure no project fails to take off because there is no electricity.

Zanu PF Secretary for Women’s Affairs Cde Mabel Chinomona recently said the wing’s leadership was pacing up mobilisation strategy so as to achieve the targeted five million votes for President Mnangagwa.

Speaking during a recent national Women’s League Induction and Mobilisation Strategy programme held at revolutionary party’s national headquarters in Harare, Cde Chinomona reiterated that President Mnangagwa was their preferred candidate for next year’s.

She added that it was time that the Women’s League boosted its mobilisation of new voters for the party and Presidential candidate.

“This is the first meeting we are meeting as top national executive after our elective conference and we reiterate our position that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is our sole candidate for next year’s elections,” she said.

“As leaders, we need to work together for the success of the party and root out divisive elements.

“Let’s tell people about the achievements made by the Second Republic and such achievements are many.”

Zanu PF Women’s League Secretary for Administration Cde Monica Mutsvangwa also challenged leaders of the wing to emulate President Mnangagwa’s visionary leadership and to safeguard Zimbabwe’s sovereignty.

She also said no woman should fail to lure more voters to Zanu PF given the numerous achievements made by the Second Republic.

Cde Mutsvangwa also called on the women to ensure that everyone who attends a Zanu PF function was a registered voter who believes in Zanu PF and President Mnangagwa’s capability to transform the country into one of the best in in the world with a sound economy and top-class infrastructure.

The upgrading and modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post has given Zimbabweans a fresh view of Zanu PF’s capacity to turn things around for the better.

At the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, work is underway to turn it into one of the best airports not just in the region, but in the world.

Already, the Victoria Falls International Airport has been upgraded and can now accommodate wide-bodied aircraft.

Probably the other important project with far-reaching benefits for many people is the widening and modernisation of the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway.

Works are ongoing but over 350km out of the 585km highway have been completed and opened to vehicular traffic.

Motorists that have used the completed stretches of the highway are astonished at the work being done there and believe the number of fatal accidents would be reduced.

More importantly, more haulage trucks are expected to consider passing through Zimbabwe from South Africa to East and Central Africa.

Before the coming in of the Second Republic, some transporters were contemplating using alternative routes since the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge road was in bad shape and damaged their vehicles while some were frequently involved in accidents while trying to avoid potholes.

Now, the highway is 12 metres wide and road verges have been cleared and one can easily see a herd of cattle well before getting close to them.

Crucially, cross-border buses and trucks no longer spend time before being cleared at the Beitbridge Border Post due to efficiencies brought by the modernisation of SADC’s busiest border.
